Weight Management (Saxenda)

Saxenda

Fill 1102Created with Sketch.

Many people who have tried to lose weight end up regaining it later on. If this is something you have experienced in the past you may wonder why it is so hard to maintain weight loss.

Did you know losing weight causes changes that make you feel hungry and less satisfied after eating? Also, your body goes into an energy-saving mode and burns fewer calories. This can slowly lead to the lost weight being regained.

Saxenda® can help reduce weight by enhancing the way your body regulates appetite. Your body produces a number of appetite regulators. One of these is called GLP-1. Saxenda® works like GLP-1 by binding to and activating GLP-1 receptors, to decrease feelings of hunger while increasing feelings of fullness, so you are eating less.

Thread Lift

1

Types of Thread Lift

There are a few types of thread lifts, the main difference is longevity, stiffness and tensile strength:

  • PDO (Polydioxanone) dissolves after 6 – 9 months
  • PLLA (Poly L Lactic Acid) dissolves after 12 – 18 months
  • PCL (Polycaprolactone) dissolves after 24 – 36 months

Considerations

Although thread lifts are advantageous, patients must maintain a realistic expectation for this procedure. While thread lifts can certainly produce visible changes, they will only be able to lift the face by a few millimeters, as such they create a more subtle and natural look than facelift surgery. Thread lifts are more suitable for mild to moderate cases of skin laxity. Once thread lifts are no longer feasible, patients may have to consider facelift surgery.

The patient needs to understand that no lifting technique is permanent, that being said a facelift surgery will produce longer-lasting results than a thread lift. Facelift surgery can last up to a decade whereas a thread lift generally lasts between one to three years.

Maintenance

To get the most out of the treatment, patients can combine thread lift with Exilis, Thermage or Ultherapy. These lasers use heat to stimulate collagen production. By combining these procedures with thread lift you can maximize the overall effect of skin firming and create even more lifting to the neck as well as the face.

While thread lifts can tighten skin, they aren’t designed to address the blemishes of the skin’s surface. As such signs of aging such as age spots, areas of uneven pigmentation and fine lines will require a different technique known as skin resurfacing. During skin resurfacing the top layer of the dermis is removed, stripping away the blemishes. A new more youthful-looking layer of the skin then grows in its place. You can do this through other lasers or fillers. It would be best to consult with the doctor on what works best for your condition.

Other Fat Loss Treatment

CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved non-invasive procedure that reduces fat through cryolipolysis (using freezing temperatures to break down fats). The cold does not damage other cells in the same way it does fat cell, therefore by doing CoolSculpting it will not damage the skin or underlying tissue nearby the treated area. Once the fat cells have been destroyed by freezing, they are gradually broken down and removed from the body by the liver.

      Skin Boosters

      By Aesthetic Medicine

      Skin Boosters

      What are Skin Boosters?

      Fill 1102Created with Sketch.

Skin boosters are an injectable treatment that is designed to deliver deep skin hydration. Most of the time, they promote a natural glow and radiance.

This relatively new treatment concept has become a lot more popular over the past few years. It particularly appeals to patients who want to look fresh and natural with their anti-ageing treatments.

Skin booster results don’t have the dramatic impact that can be associated with the better known non-surgical treatments. They don’t “freeze” the features or stop muscle movement (like BOTOX® can), although they can help to smooth out lines and wrinkles. They won’t deliver exaggerated or over-inflated results like dermal fillers can, although they can add more subtle volume by gently plumping the skin.

      Skin Boosters

Profhilo is an injectable skin remodelling treatment that is used for its subtle but immediate hydrating and skin tightening results. The product has won multiple aesthetics awards and is loved by beauty editors and celebrity facialists the world over due to its almost-instant and long-lasting results.

Profhilo® is a revolutionary ‘beneath the skin’ hyaluronic acid moisturising treatment, made with the patented NAHYCO® technology. This results in a unique hyaluronic acid injectable gel, which has a prolonged stimulating activity on the dermal cells. When injected into skin, Profhilo® stimulates the skin cell receptors to counteract skin laxity and improve and restore firmness of the skin.

One of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid on the market, Profhilo® not only boosts and hydrates the skin, but also remodels ageing and sagging tissue. The most common areas of treatment include the face and neck and can also be used for the décolletage, hands, arms, knees and abdomen area where it would effectively treat skin laxity. The treatment is suitable for men and women as well as offering skin benefits for patients of all ages.

Juvéderm® VOLITE is a minimally invasive injectable treatment that delivers hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the skin, directly into the dermis layer. HA attracts water to hydrate skin, improves elasticity and reduce fine lines.

Plinest® is a skin regeneration and rejuvenation treatment that uses pure and high-quality polynucleotide (PN) gel to repair your skin and keep it healthy and glowing.

Plinest pioneered the use of polynucleotide (PN) gel, which was then used in Rejuran and other PN or PDRN gel treatments that have recently saturated the market.

Because of its biochemical, hydrating, and viscoelastic properties, Plinest enhances skin elasticity. Plinest can also improve fibrous tissue regions like scars and stretch marks, making it the innovative game-changer in scar and stretch mark treatment.

Plinest, known in the aesthetic market as the Ferrari of regeneration gels, is made from DNA fragments collected from Italian Trout Fish using Mastelli’s HPT technology, devised and developed in Italy.

A natural physiological procedure stimulates dermal bio-revitalization and collagen repair, enhancing skin quality from within. Plinest treatment can reportedly give you better skin brightness, improved skin texture, and enhanced skin elasticity, giving you a healthier and more radiant appearance.

It is ideal for treating dry skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines on your face, and reversing the signs of skin aging.

Alopecia is a condition of partial or complete hair loss in an individual. Alopecia may begin with hair loss on the scalp, either in patches or on the entire head. The onset of this disease is often random, sudden, and recurrent. It can affect any hair-bearing area of the body. Alopecia is an autoimmune disease with a prevalence ranging between 41% and 73% in Asia. Factors such as unhealthy eating habits, increasing consumption of alcohol and smoking lead to accelerated hair loss. However, stress remains one of the leading causes of hair loss among a vast pool of Asian populations.

Effective treatment for hair loss begins with finding the cause. To get an accurate diagnosis, it helps to see a good aesthetician. These doctors have in-depth knowledge about the many causes of hair loss and experience treating the diverse causes.

              Facelift: Take The Years Away

              By 2022 June, blog

              What causes sagging skin?
Sagging skin is due to two reasons: loss of collagen, which gives the skin elasticity, and loss of facial fat, the absence of which causes the skin to droop.

Age is the most obvious answer. As we age, we’ll find that gravity does a number on us, your skin loses its elasticity, you will notice that it doesn’t bounce back as it used to when you were younger.

Being outdoors for long hours means higher exposure of UV, which over time breaks collagen down. To combat this, make sure you apply plenty of sunscreen before leaving your home. Whether you are indoors or outdoors, it is equally important to apply sunscreen.

Weight loss may also be a culprit to sagging skin. The idea is when you gain weight, the skin on your face stretches along with the extra padding, but when you finally lose it, you may notice eye bags and a slack jaw. To combat this, you may opt for aesthetic treatments (non-surgical) such as injectable fillers to give your face “additional volume”.

Aesthetic treatments cannot achieve the same results as cosmetic surgery but may help delay the aging process. At some point of time, a facelift (surgical) is necessary to address the dramatic signs of aging.

              What is a facelift?
A Rhytidectomy, a.k.a. facelift to the rest of us is a procedure in cosmetic surgery that aims to give a more youthful appearance to the face. A facelift can tighten loose, hanging skin around the jowls (jawline). It can also remove deep creases around the mouth and nose, and any excess fat and skin under the chin and turkey neck. The procedure can be combined with a browlift to enhance the forehead, brows, and eyelids. In fact, it is commonly done together, an overall facelift is one of the most popular procedures in the center.

There are many different types of facelift procedures that exist. The differences are mostly in the type of incision, the invasiveness and the area of the face that is treated. Every surgeon has their preference and some practice using multiple different types of facelift surgery. It is best to consult with your surgeon on your expected outcome and which procedure is best for your needs. There are other factors that need to be considered such as patient expectation, age, recovery time, etc.

What is the facelift surgery process like?
If the patient is on medication, such as blood thinners or aspirin, he or she has to stop as it will cause bruising. However, if the patient is a diabetic or has hypertension, he or she may continue with the medication. Our plastic surgeon will provide pre-operation instructions, please ensure you follow the guidelines or you may not be able to proceed with the facelift surgery.

              Before Facelift Surgery
Firstly, the nurses will prepare the patient. When the patient is in a sitting position, the surgeon will start with marking. In the marking process, it is not just an indicator where the surgeon will make an incision, but also the angle in which it will be inserted. Marking can’t be done when the patient is laying down, as there will be muscle moment when the patient is lying flat, this is why surgeons get the marking done before the surgery. It is a very crucial process to ensure the success of the surgery.

After the surgeon has done the initial marking process, the anesthetist will see the patient and assess them, they will be injected with general anesthesia which will knock the patient out for a short time. The nurses will then check on the general well-being of the patient such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, etc. Once the nurses have completed, the doctor can begin the surgery.

              During Facelift Surgery
The facelift is quite a long procedure, it takes roughly 4 hours, this is the reason why surgeons prefer to use general anesthesia. It will be more comfortable for the patient to be under general anesthesia rather than local anesthesia, as patients will not hold still under local anesthesia for 4 hours.

The surgeon will give antibiotics and anti-clogging medicine through IV during the surgery, small doses of steroids will help to reduce swelling.

Traditionally, the surgeons will make an incision in front of the ear, extending up into the hair/hairline as well as behind the ear into the hair-bearing scalp.

The surgeon then lifts the skin off the deeper facial muscles and fat, gently pulls the skin in an upward direction and removes any excess skin. They may also tighten the deeper tissues of the face.

If the patient is getting an additional neck lift, a small incision will be made under the chin to tighten the skin.

The next step for the surgeon is to close the incisions with sutures. A drain may be placed under the skin behind the eat for one or two days, to remove any excess blood or fluids. Bandages are then applied.

              After Surgery & Recovery
Once the surgery is completed, the patient will be placed under observation for 1 – 2 days in the ward.

First Day After Surgery: There will be bandage around your face.

Second Day After Surgery: Patient is allowed to shower, it is safe for the wounds to get wet. If there are no complications, the patient can be discharged. If patients are concerned about how they look after the surgery, they can opt to keep their hair down and wear dark sunglasses.

Day 5 to 10 After Surgery: Sutures will be removed. At this point, the patient must follow the specific instructions given by the team for bathing and washing. It’s important to follow these instructions, as it will speed the healing process and allow for the best possible results.

Generally, a facelift is not a painful procedure, however, there  may be slight discomfort because of the swelling from the surgery. If there is a lot of swelling, it could be an indicator of bleeding or a blood clot. If the swelling becomes too large, it will need to be drained. It is uncommon during facelift surgery; however, it can happen sometimes.

After the surgery, the swelling will dissipate around 2 weeks. Kindly refrain from vigorous activities and weight lifting. You may resume light exercises after 4 weeks. Patients are advised to come for regular check-ups until the swelling comes down. There will be medications given to the patient; such as antibiotics to relieve tenderness.

Scarring may take place and can take up to a year for it to fade, however, if this is a strong concern of yours do talk to our doctors, as Beverly offers aesthetic procedures in tackling scarring.

Do take note that the result of a facelift does not last forever, is said to last around 10 years.

              Maintenance
As part of maintenance after the facelift surgery, there are several things you can do:

              1. Healthy lifestyle: Balanced diet and sufficient exercise will help to maintain supple skin.
              2. Avoid smoking, alcohol, stress if possible, otherwise consider minimizing them.
              3. Try liquid gold, a.k.a. injectables such as Fillers and Botox.
              4. Using RF therapy such as Exilis and Thermage can also assist in stimulating collagen reproduction.
              5. We’ve often heard how damaging the sun is, it really is the skin’s worst enemy. Long-term exposure causes the collagen to break down and elastin to deteriorate. Avoid sun exposure and contact with pollutants, these can all add up to help extend your youthful appearance. It’s vital to choose broad spectrum sunscreens that effectively cover UVA/UVB, which offers longer-lasting protection. It’s best to use at least SPF50 in our hot Malaysian weather.
              6. Using a cream or serum containing retinoids (creams with Vitamin A) each day will help to re-stimulate production of collagen.
              7. Protect your face against free radicals (a.k.a environmental factors), choose products containing antioxidants such as Vitamin C.

What are the best ways to get rid of large pores?

              By 2022 June, blog

A person’s pore may be more or less noticeable depending on their skin type. If a person is concerned about the appearance of their pores, there are some home remedies that may help.

              Quick Facts

              ·        Pores are tiny holes in a person’s skin.

              ·        If a person has large pores, they may not beable to change this.

              ·        It is possible to reduce the appearance of pores by keeping them unclogged.

              Why do pores become enlarged?

Every person’s skin is covered in tiny hairs, apart from the palms of their hands and feet. Each hair follicle has a pore at the top.

Every follicle has a gland inside that produces oil. This is called the sebaceous gland. When the sebaceous gland releases oil, the oil rises to the top of the skin and collects in the pore.

Excessive sebum: sebaceous gland produces excess oil, produces oily skin

Decreased elasticityaround the pore: skin becomes less supple, making pores appear enlarged

Increased hairfollicle volume: Pore gets clogged

When oil collects in the pore and combines with dirt or makeup, the pore can become blocked. This stretches the pore, making it look bigger than it is. If the pores remain clogged, a pimple will most likely form.

8 Ways to minimize large pores

              1. Choosing water-based products

It would be wise to avoid oil-based products, as this will lead to excess oil on the skin making pores appear larger.

              2. Wash, wash, wash

Make it a routine to wash your face every morning and evening, it cleanses the oil and dirt from the pores, which will help with reducing their appearance.

              3. Choosing gel-based cleanser

If your skin errs on the oil side, gel cleansers are your best friends. Remember that gel is activated by water,so dampen your skin before you foam up with gel cleanser. The benefits of a gel cleanser are to eliminate surface oil and impurities on your skin.

              4. Exfoliating

Exfoliating once or twice a week helps to remove things from pore that can be blocking them; this includes dirt, dead skin cells and excess oil. Look for exfoliating products containing salicylic acid, which is a natural acid that helps release dirt from the pores.

              5. Applying a clay mask

Apply all over your face and sit back and relax. Masking should be once or twice a week, but beware not to leave the clay mask too long. The damp clay mask will release beneficial minerals, and the start of the dry phase will exercise your capillaries and stimulate blood flow as the mask cools. When it hits the dry phase beware, it will draw moisture away from the surface of your skin, so make sure when you mask don’t leave it till it cracks.
              6. Moisturizing daily

We admit that moisturizing oily skin may seem counterintuitive; however, it does assist in reducing pore size. Moisturizers hydrate and often the skin, allowing the sebum to penetrate deeper into the skin, thus they won’t be sitting on the surface of your pores.

              7. ALWAYS remove makeup at night

It is essential to ALWAYS remove makeup before going to sleep, we can’t emphasize this enough. Sleeping with makeup overnight will lead to pores becoming blocked, which will lead to buildup of bacteria in the pores.

              8. Wearing sunscreen

Dry skin = larger pores. So make sure to get your skin protected by wearing a wide-brim hat, lather up on the sunscreen and stay in the shade when the sun is the strongest.

              How to promote healthier skin

Are you doing all the above steps but still find your pore glaring at you. Here are some additional steps that you can undertake to promote healthier skin:

              ·        Eat Well

              ·        Drink Water (Plenty of it)

              ·        Exercise Regularly

              Other treatment options:

              Smartxide2

One of the first machines to combine a fractional CO2 laser with radiofrequency (RF) is here at Beverly Wilshire in Kuala Lumpur. When to see a doctor

If you have ongoing problems with your skin, such as acne, they should schedule an appointment with a Dermatologist or Aesthetic Specialist, who can recommend an appropriate treatment.

How to Achieve Healthy Aging with Stem Cells?

              By 2022 June, blog

Along with Dr. Kent Woo, the information below is a detailed description of the stem cell therapy and will help you to decide if you would like to accept such therapy. Please read the infographic thoroughly and you are encouraged to ask any questions related to the therapy.

              What is wellness and aging?

Wellness refers to the state of the body and mind which are in harmony and balance. In wellness, the body and mind will thrive, exude positiveness and creativity, and are ready to accept challenges.

Aging is a natural process when the number of cells dying each day starts to outweigh the new cells that are being created to replace the former. New cells are formed from progenitor cells which in turn are formed by stem cells. Stem cells dwindle with age and therefore the effects of aging are really the effects of reduced stem cells. However, stem cells are also reduced due to diseases, illnesses, environmental factors such as smoking and heavy drinking, lack of exercise and undernourishment and mental depression.

              What are stem cells?

Stem cells which are found in our body are non-specific cells without any tissue-specific structure. They can easily replicate themselves to form specific cells such as heart muscle cells or nerve cells and to perform specific functions.

Research is now showing that stem cells can slow down the progress of some diseases by replicating into specific cells and replacing the damaged cells in the body; thus, restoring the vitality and functionality of the organs. In fact, stem cells can also be expanded outside the body under laboratory conditions and later transplanted in the defective area of the organ for it to regain its functional efficiency. Because of this anti-aging property, cosmetic formulations based on stem cell regenerative therapy are increasingly being introduced to the market to halt the mark of aging on the skin and restore its youthful glow.

There are many types of stem cell such as blood stem cells, otherwise known as hematopoietic stem cells, which form blood related-cells. We have selected a type of stem cells known as human mesenchymal stem cell. These mesenchymal stem cells have been proven to be able to change into heart muscle cells, cartilage, fat cells, nerve cells and many other cell types. Additionally, mesenchymal stem cells have also been used for clinical trial to treat several diseases. This regeneration property makes these mesenchymal stem cell as an anti-aging therapy.

How do stem cells help in wellness and healthy aging?

Stem cells help in wellness and healthy aging by ensuring that the number of new cells generated each day is adequate to compensate for old cells which are removed from the body. In order for this strategy to work, you must receive enough stem cells which are in the tens to hundreds of millions. It is not possible to obtain these amounts of stem cells naturally. Therefore, the stem cells are cultured and expanded in a clean sterile laboratory before introduction into your body. This ensures consistent stem cell quality and numbers at every stem cell infusion.

Why human and not animal stem cells?

Humans differ significantly from animals. Animal stem cells are also considered old technology and will not ever be able to function in the human as stem cells to provide new cells for specialized organs and tissue. In fact, they are hunted down by the immune defense cells in the human body and destroyed altogether. Therefore, any effects noticed by the patient are transient and most probably related to its associated growth factors in the serum. However, should the animal stem cells overwhelm the host immune system then it will cause a severe reaction. There has been consistent report on the safety issues of using animal stem cells. This is why animal stem cells are currently prohibited in many countries.

Furthermore, animal placental stem cells were used which contain a mix-bag of cells. A lot of animals were required to produce a single treatment. This older technology which does not provide pure stem cells and requires animals to be sacrificed has now been superseded by more humane and advanced technological methods.

              What are mesenchymal stem cells?

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are human stem cells which have so far demonstrated the greatest ability to turn into other tissue types including the nerves, the heart muscles, blood vessels, cartilage, bone, collagen producing cells, fat tissue, insulin producing cells, kidney cells, liver cells and skin. In addition, the MSCs are immunopriviledged; which means that they will not be killed by the host immune defence cells and neither will they cause a reaction. Finally, MSCs carry with them a host of growth factors and hormones which help to host cells to recharge and rejuvenate. Therefore, the MSCs do not just replenish stem cells but also salvage and revive any dwindling stem cells in the host. MSCs are currently the most widely researched stem cell in clinical studies and have been extensively studied in patients with heart disease, stroke, sports injuries and arthritis and autoimmune disease.

What is the evidence behind it?

There is a wealth of information about the benefits of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the treatment of various diseases. In all these cases, treatment with MSCs result in reduction of organ damage, restoration of function, improvement in total well-being and greater energy. These effects have been noted in varying degrees with patients with severe heart failure, major heart attacks, strokes and other neurodegenerative diseases, head and spinal cord injuries, musculoskeletal disease and injuries, autoimmune diseases and diabetes. If the MSCs could help treat such severe organ damage in ill patients, therefore, it could potentially be much better employed to prevent the organ injury or disease in the first place.

              Are stem cells safe?

Stem cells are safe when obtained from your own body for your own use only. When using another person’s stem cells there is a theoretical possibility of a host versus graft reaction. This has not been seen with Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and so MSCs are widely used in allogeneic treatments. Animal stem cells and embryonic/fetal stem cells potentially have more hazardous complications such as cancer formations and severe reactions.

Therefore, apart from your own stem cells, the next safest source of stem cells would be human Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) especially if that donor has not been exposed to environmental carcinogens (smoking, UV, radiation, chemicals in foods, etc) such as from the umbilical cord of a newborn. Furthermore, all our donors were free from genetic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, chronic infections and cancer for at least three generations.

              How are stem cells processed?

All Mesenchymal stem cells are handled from the beginning to the end by specially trained and experienced scientists who ensure that the cells were labelled, transported, isolated and expanded in a professional and sterile manner.

Before we release our stem cells for treatment, we will perform several tests. We will perform tests to ensure that the stem cells are free from infectious diseases. These tests include RPR (VDRL), HIV 1 & 2 Antibody, Hepatitis B surface Antigen (HbsAg), Hepatitis C Antibody (Total) – Anti-HCV, Cytomegalovirus IgM Antibody, HTLV 1 & II Antibody and HIV p24 Antigen.

In our laboratory, we utilize the most modern method of stem cell production to produce good and viable stem cells. We will perform tests to check the stem cells for appropriate surface markers and to determine the condition of the cells. We will send the expanded stem cells to test for bacterial culture, fungal culture and mycoplasma before releasing the cells for treatment.

If the stem cells fail any one of the tests above, the cells will be discarded and new stem cells will be isolated. All the above-mentioned tests are performed to ensure that we only provide you with the purest stem cells which are free from contamination.

How are the stem cells prepared before they are infused into my body?

To maintain the viability of the stem cells and its highest quality, we will store the stem cells in an extremely cold condition. When you agree to receive this stem cell treatment, the date for your stem cell treatment will be arranged. On treatment day, our highly qualified scientist will thaw and wash the stem cells before infusing them into your body. We will only thaw the stem cells when all details of your treatment are confirmed and will infuse the stem cells into your body as soon as possible after preparation.

What will happen on my confirmed treatment day?

You are advised to arrive at hospital at least 30-60 minutes in advance. A nurse will first give you a saline drip which is a 30 minutes procedure to prepare your body in receiving the stem cells. After that, the stem cells will be slowly infused into your vein via a syringe pump for about 30 minutes. Once stem cell infusion has completed, you will continue to have saline drip for another 15 – 30 minutes. This is to encourage stem cell circulation in your body after stem cell infusion. Once this process is completed, you may go home and continue your normal daily activities. If you have any previous allergies or hay fever, please inform doctor in advance and you may be given a prophylactic injection prior to stem cell therapy.

The most important step is to understand the nature and objectives of the therapy. Your doctor will also assess you thoroughly to make sure that you are eligible for stem cell treatments. This may include a questionnaire, simple blood test, some imaging and functional tests.

How often should we go for such therapy?

This varies with your age and prevailing conditions such as smoking, diabetes, etc. Normally we recommend receiving the treatment once to three times a year.

Stem cell therapy for specific conditions may be given concurrently during this time whereby the cells are directly injected into the organ or area concerned in order to provide the maximal effect of healing. Stem cell dose will vary depending on the severity of the condition.

What are the side-effects and complications?

You may experience discomfort on the injection site during the stem cell infusion. Some recipients may experience low-grade fever after stem cell infusion, which may be treated with antipyretics. Reaction against allogenic mesenchymal stem cells infusion has been reported in less than 1% and new or recurrent cancer directly related to MSCs infusion has not yet been reported. If you feel any discomfort after the stem cell infusion which persists, please contact us immediately.

              What are the benefits?

The testimonials of benefits include improved sense of wellbeing greater energy and stamina, improved memory, improved libido, less bone and joint pains, firmer skin and new coarser and darker hair. Clinically it has been documented that intravenous infusion of MSCs in patients with severe heart failure resulted in greater heart strength, less breathlessness, improved exercise capacity, lower requirement for insulin doses (for diabetes patients), improved kidney function and reduced hospitalizations. In other studies, MSCS have increased bone mineral density and reduced progression of osteoporosis, accelerated recovery in stroke, brain and spinal cord injuries and improved remission or delayed progression in patients with allergic and autoimmune diseases such as eczema, multiple sclerosis and lupus.

What else can I do to maintain wellness and healthy aging?

Wellness and healthy aging is not influenced by stem cells alone. You must help yourself by watching your diet. Fresh and organic produce in rich in essential vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants and consumed in moderate quantities is important. So is regular physical exercise and adequate sleep. This healthy lifestyle is more important than stem cell or any other wellness and healthy aging strategies. On the other hand, mental stress, excessive consumption of food or drinks, too much sugar or fried foods, a sedentary lifestyle and smoking will sap your energy that stem cells alone will not be enough to compensate for.

If I decide to go for the therapy, what is my next step?

Please first make sure you fully understood the nature and objectives of stem cell therapy. Please discuss any of your concerns and expectations with us.

What if I have more questions or do not understand something?

You may contact us at any time to discuss about your treatment.

Dr Nasir: Proportionate breasts are the new trend

              By 2022 June, blog

The notion that most women prefer to undergo breast augmentation (also known as breast enlargement) is old fashioned. And many Hollywood stars agree. Heidi Montag has just fearlessly acknowledged that bigger breasts does not always necessarily mean better. Heidi underwent two surgical procedures to enlarge her breasts first to a C-cup, then to an F-cup. Four years later, with an F-cup, she finally admitted that she “couldn’t conceptualise the weight of her F-cups in her body. They were as heavy as bowling balls” – and had a breast reduction to C-cups again recently. Even artists like Sharon Osbourne, Victoria Beckham, Heather Morris, Jenna Jameson, Tara Reid, Kimberly Stewart, Pamela Anderson, and Courtney Love have opted for breast implant removal or to at least go down a cup or two from their previous set of implants. That they have chosen this is not a surprise at all, as overly large breasts can sometimes result in both health and emotional problems. The days of overly-big breasted women are now slowly dissipating. Owning a slim body with proportionate-sized breasts is the new buzz in town.

Dr. Mohamad Nasir, one of our Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgeons, says that before surgery, patients need to develop an understanding of the right breast size to suit the proportion and shape of their bodies. To decide how this is done, he says, that “The dimensions of the breasts will be measured in terms of the width and height of the patient.” He further explains that cosmetic surgeons recommend their patients to obtain breast implants that will enhance their femininity, instead of just opting for a particularly large chest. Equally, if women choose a breast reduction, they should also consider what size would suit them. Far from being a rare case, breast reduction is actually quite common, and Dr Nasir outlines some of the many reasons why women consider undergoing the procedure:

                • Pain in the shoulders, back and neck caused from extremely large breasts
                • Uneven growth of the breasts, when one is noticeably bigger than the other
                • The weight of their breasts disrupts daily activity, even sleeping
                • The skin beneath the crease of the breasts is constantly irritated
                • Acute embarrassment about their large breasts
                • Difficulty in choosing the right bra or finding clothing that fits comfortably
                • The skin of their breasts look stretched and their areolas have enlarged due to this

If it is breast augmentation that the women are after, cosmetic surgeons firmly believe in helping women to choose reasonably-sized implants, and even have special padded t-shirts that clients can try on to view their figure before surgery, helping them make the right decision. Dr. Nasir further explains, “Making sure that women choose the right implants for them is an effort to prevent the patient from having backache, shoulder pain and bad posture from adding in implants that weigh too much for the waist to support.” Ultimately, the final decision of augmentation or reduction, and just what the right size is, lies with the patient herself – a doctor can only give their professional opinion. Just make sure that you comprehend the risks and benefits of breast reduction or augmentation surgery, while keeping a realistic expectation in mind.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) by Dr Jessie Lim

              By 2022 June, blog

Many have heard of the wonders this treatment delivers but what exactly is it? Known as ‘PRP’ in short, it stands for ‘Platelet Rich Plasma’. It’s basically what it is, concentrated of platelets in small volume of plasma. Platelets have great ability to repair, regenerate tissue of skin.

What is the treatment process like ?

Platelets generally get activated via vibration & heat. And once it is activated, it reproduces a variety of growth factors.  Prior to treatment, a sample blood sample about 10-20ml is collected and placed into a centrifuge, where the blood sample is spin at a very high speed.  An anticoagulant is added to prevent platelets activation prior to its use.

Is everyone fit for this treatment? Some indications of suitability of patients to undergo this treatment are: alopecia (hair loss), skin rejuvenation (aging skin), acne scars, wound healing (post-surgery) and sports injury (ligament/ tendon).

What other treatments can be done together with PRP?

              1. Fillers: Fill specific lines and folds, when combined with PRP, it improves overall volume, fullness, and skin tone.
              2. CO2 fractional laser: This ablative lasers generate thermal energy targeting skin at specific depth, sparing tissue around from damage. This prompt epidermal regeneration is made better with PRP regenerative properties.

              PRP is usually done:

              Advantages of PRP Rejuvenation:

              • No risk of allergy
              • Natural collagen
              • Little to no swelling
              • Enhance lasers and improve healing

              Acne Troubles

              By 2022 June, blog

Genes do a play a role in whether you get acne. If you have ever wondered why some people are not bothered with skincare and yet have flawless skin, whilst others who are careful still end up with acne, then you have genetics to blame for it. For some acne clears up by late teens, while others have acne till late adulthood.

Acne can be annoying and is often a cause for embarrassment, it is normally associated with teenagers. Below are the visible signs and symptoms to look out for. Depending on the severity, acne can cause emotional distress and scars on the skin, the earlier you get treated by a dermatologist, the lower the risk of such problems.

              Symptoms of Acne

              • Non-inflammatory Acne (will not cause scarring):
                • Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)
                • Blackheads (open plugged pores)
              • Inflammatory Acne (which often leads to scars)
                • Red Bumps (papules)
                • Pimples (pustules), i.e. those with pus
                • Large, solid, painful lumps beneath the skin (nodules)
                • Painful, pus-filled lumps beneath the surface of the skin (cystic lesions)

              What Causes Acne?

Acne usually occurs during puberty, when the body is going through hormonal changes. The problem starts with oil glands, they produce an oily substance called sebum. It typically appears on your face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders, because these areas have the most oil, hair follicles also connected to oil glands.

The follicle wall may appear bulging and produces a whitehead, or if the plug is open to the surface, then it darkens causing a blackhead. Blackheads are pores with congested bacteria and oil, which turns brown when exposed to the air.

Pimples are raised red spots with white centre, it develops when blocked hair follicles become inflamed or infected with bacteria. Blockages or inflammation that develop deep inside hair follicles produce cyst-like lumps beneath the surface of your skin.

              • Avoid Facial Scrubbing
              • Oily Sunblock

              Treatment

There are many ways to treat acne. The main concern would be to unclog the pores and to keep them clear. By doing so, the bacteria that grows in clogged pores can be controlled; thus, reducing acne flare-ups. Treatment should also regulate the secretion of sebum to a manageable level.

Dermatologist can treat acne with creams, oral medication, chemical peels, LED light or laser treatments depending on severity. It is important to note that laser may not always be the best option for acne, but would be good for acne scars.

Most acne treatment will cause the skin to peel. Do note that this is not due to skin allergy, if this happens, let your Dermatologist know, and they will advise you on how to minimize the effect.

              Oral Medication

There are 3 groups of oral medication: oral Vitamin A, the hormonal medication, and the oral antibiotics. Your dermatologists will discuss which is best suited to you.

              Chemical Peel

Chemical peels – a treatment where it peels one or more top layers of the skin, dislodging the dead cells and clogged pores; thus, allowing acne creams to penetrate better. Repeated treatments lead to regeneration of skin cells, stimulates collagen growth, clears acne and lightens or improve acne scars. Generally, you would need several treatments before you see results of cleared acne.

              LED Light

LED Light treatment or phototherapy uses light emitting diodes or various wavelength and its useful for combating inflammatory acne. Red and blue light therapy can be used together to treat active acne, the blue light helps reduce bacteria, whilst the red light helps with skin healing.

              Laser

Lasers can reduce the size of your oil glands making acne less active and skin less oily. It can also improve acne scars, removing the redness of the skin. Although it is an effective method to treat acne, it should not be the first line of defence, as it could be costly. Non-laser treatments can be equally effective in combating acne.

              Acne Scars

As mentioned previously, there are many types of acne scars. The shallower scars can be removed through various means such as creams, chemical peels or lasers to flatten the scars; however, if they are deep then you may need subcision or scar surgery before applying laser treatments. Our dermatologist can identify the types of scars and determine which treatments would be best suited.

              Acne in Adults

Some acne persists into adulthood, they fall into two categories: those who have acne in their teenage years, and those who had clear skin as teens but develop acne in their middle age.

If any first-degree relative (such as parents, siblings, or children) have acne, you have a 50% chance of getting acne. Some adults have hormonal swings which lead to acne, which is why women are more prone to getting acne, such as when they start/stop taking birth control pills that contain only progestins. They tend to be more severe in adults, causing larger bumps that are often painful and deep seated.

Acne in adults are treated in much the same way as teenage acne, with the exception that most women will need oral medication to get better control of their acne.

Now that you understand about your acne conditions and what has caused it to manifest. It’s important to speak to a dermatologist and get the right treatment. The earlier you realize the signs, the higher chance you have of preventing acne and scarring.
