Kids should get a consult for braces when their adult teeth begin coming in, which usually happens around the age of 7. This is a time for an initial consultation to identify if braces could be needed. If a child has severe need for braces, plans for treatment may be arranged during this appointment. However, most kids get braces between the ages of 10 to 14.

Braces can result in discomfort when they’re first placed in the mouth and after each adjustment. When braces are first put on, it will probably take a week for all disconfort to subside.

Most children will wear braces between 1 to 3 year, although this time frame may extend beyond 3 years depending on how many phases of treatment are needed and the severity of the situation. 

• Losses baby teeth too early, too late or irregularly
• Has teeth that are crowded or misplaced
• Has shifting jaws
• Has trouble biting or chewing
• Has jaws and teeth that are not in proportion to the face
• Has an overbite
• Has an underbite

Most appointments for adjustment will be made every 3 to 8 weeks. It will take teeth at least 3 weeks to move after an adjustment. Children may therefore need to visit the orthodontist once a month or once every other month. Your child’s orthodontist will set a schedule for adjustment based on the progress of teeth movement. Because the wires used in braces have become stronger, most adjustment appointments can be made every 6-8 weeks.
